Hello! I'm Joel. I enjoy almost all sports,
especially basketball, football, and baseball. My favorite recreational
activities are horseback riding and fishing.
But I enjoy a score
(pardon the pun) of sports, games, and recreation, including
"ping-pong," darts, volleyball, and softball. I believe that sports
are not only beneficial to the body,
but also to the soul. Sports
encompasses several metaphors and themes that can be applied or
compare to life, both positiveely and negatively. While we are tired of
the athletes who are self-centered,
spoiled, and greedy, I tend to
look at this glass as half-full, not half empty, especially concerning
local little league, middle school, and high school sports, and then
collegiate sports.
There are millions of athletes in the United
States and billions on our planet Earth who sacrifice and devote
countless hours of practice, preparation, and dedication to the
sports they choose to participate during
a time which several other
avenues of entertainment and temptation may be more "popular" to most
students. I also include cheerleaders, band members, coaches, leaders, teachers
, and administrators as people of character and
commitment
(for the most part). I'm a middle school teacher and from my
viewpoint, research, and experience, I find that most kids and young
adults involved in extracurricular activities are less likely to drop
out of school and
more likely to earn honor roll status as compared
to the general student population.
I'm not saying that sports and
other extracurricular activities are more important than academics
and learning. They are clearly not. I'm stating that an individual may
be a champion and a winner in all of his or her endeavors, whatever the
task.
There are countless stories of kids who would be lost and be
"hanging out" on the streets if not for the opportunity to play a
sport or to join a club. They learn self-discipline and how to focus.
Sports require a different type of intelligence than
most school
subjects. Most sports require recognition, analytical, and response
skills - decision-making that must be made in an instant, on the spot,
and to be responsible for effort and the consequences of their actions.
Athletics can build, test,
and adjust one's attitude and teach us
lessons of teamwork, cooperation, and unselfishness.
